The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has proudly welcomed its newest cohort of First Year Constables (FYCs), with 66 recruits graduating from the QPS Academy in Brisbane.

The FYCs are set to begin their policing careers, serving diverse communities across Queensland, including Brisbane, Mt Isa, Townsville and Roma.

Acting Commissioner Brett Pointing APM congratulated the graduates on their achievement and welcomed them to the Service.

"I commend the recruits for the dedication they have shown throughout their training, which reflects the values of integrity, courage and respect they will carry into their policing careers. They will play an important role in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of Queenslanders," Acting Commissioner Pointing said.

"Through their rigorous training, our recruits have developed the skills, knowledge and resilience needed to meet the challenges of modern policing."

QPS recruits complete a comprehensive 32-week Recruit Training Program, which combines theory, scenario-based learning, and operational skills and tactics training. This is complemented by station duty placements, where recruits put their training into practice on the frontline.

Amongst the newest Constables is Hayley Petersen, who knew she wanted to pursue a career in policing from a young age.

"I attended a school careers event where QPS had a stall, I ended up speaking with the officer there for 2 hours, learning more about the job and the application process, it convinced me that this was the right path for me," Constable Peterson said.

Former Australian Defence Force infantry soldier Brandon Stewart is looking forward to continuing a career dedicated to serving the community, drawing on the skills, experience and discipline he gained during his time in the ADF.

"When I left the Army, I knew I wanted a rewarding career where I could continue making a positive difference," Constable Stewart said.

"My time in the ADF taught me the importance of communication, staying calm under pressure and working as part of a team. These skills will be invaluable as I begin my policing career."

Constable Theola Mea was ready for a career change, after migrating to Australia from Papua New Guinea and becoming a nurse.

"I reflected on my career and realised I wanted a new challenge while still working with people, problem solving and making a positive difference in the community," Constable Mea said.

Before commencing the Recruit Training Program, Constable Mea completed the Multicultural Recruit Preparation Pathway, a six-week QPS Academy program designed to support recruits from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and prepare them for successful careers in policing.
