A hands off road safety lesson

A hands off road safety lesson

An important message hit home for residents of Logan today – safe driving saves lives.

Hundreds of people attended the Logan Road Safety Expo at Browns Plains' Grand Plaza this morning, where delegates from Logan City Council, Transport and Main Roads and the Queensland Police Service were on hand to educate local drivers.

Last year, 245 people were killed on Queensland roads and more than 5,606 people were seriously injured.

Logan joins councils across the state in marking Queensland Road Safety Week this week.

Each day of the 2019 campaign has focussed on one of the fatal five – seatbelts, speeding, fatigue, driver distraction and driving under the influence.

Springwood Road Policing Unit Senior Constable Tony Fishburn attended today's expo to guide participants through the station's popular 2N2 driving simulator, which is designed to educate road users about the dangers of mobile phone use while driving.

Senior Constable Fishburne said the issue continued to be a significant concern for local police.

"I issued five tickets for mobile phone driving yesterday in just an hour which is very disappointing," he said.

"We need to get the message out that distracted driving kills.

"That's what the 2N2 driving simulator is for, to demonstrate that there is simply no safe way to use a mobile phone while driving."

Logan's Queensland Road Safety Week campaign will continue at tomorrow night's Eats and Beats event at the Logan Hyperdome, from 5pm.

Attendees will be able to put questions to road safety experts and try the 2N2 simulator, which will be set up in the Piazza.
