Western Australia Greenlights New Clean Energy Projects

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

The Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy has announced the results of Tenders 5 and 6 under the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS).

Ten new renewable energy and battery projects were approved for Western Australia, delivering:

  • 1.886 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable electricity generation
  • 3.683 gigawatt hours (GWh) of standalone battery storage.

The projects will add generation and storage to the state's Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM), helping keep power reliable as older generators retire and electricity demand grows.

The 10 projects are expected to:

  • produce enough electricity to supply more than one million Western Australian households
  • support peak demand for more than 400,000 households for up to four hours
  • support more than 7,000 jobs during construction
  • support more than 500 operations and maintenance jobs each year over their lifetime.

Developers have also made commitments for local communities, First Nations participation and Australian‑made materials.

Community and First Nations commitments

Subject to final contracts, projects supported under Tender 5 have committed an estimated:

  • $67.1 million in community shared benefits
  • $89.7 million in First Nations benefits
  • Over $20.6 million in Australian‑made steel

Projects supported under Tender 6 have committed an estimated:

  • $8.6 million in community shared benefits
  • $67.3 million in First Nations benefits
  • Over $1.6 million in Australian‑made steel
