ACT Greens to Deliver Improved Planning Bill

Australian Greens

The ACT Greens have worked on a package of over 100 amendments to address community concerns.

"We in the Greens had a different view to our colleagues in Labor on how to achieve a better planning system," said Jo Clay MLA, Greens spokesperson for planning.

"Canberra needs high-quality climate-resilient development that provides housing and services for our people and the environment. Unfortunately, the draft Planning Bill tabled last September could not achieve this.

"As such, the ACT Greens used our ability under the Parliamentary and Governing Agreement to step out of Cabinet and work independently towards a better planning bill.

"We have talked to the community and stakeholders, reviewed Committee recommendations, and developed genuine solutions. We have continued to work and negotiate with our ACT Labor colleagues to get many of these across the line," said Ms Clay.

"Through our negotiations, we have ensured there will be a governance review and a package of 125 amendments to address concerns raised. If the Bill passes, work will begin on the next stages for the Territory Plan. We will continue pushing the Government to ensure the new system has the resources and scrutiny it needs to be effective," said Ms Clay.

Debate is expected to take several hours on Tuesday and may spill into Wednesday. The Greens have reserved their position since leaving Cabinet and only expect to pass a Bill if it is significantly amended to address community concerns.
