More affordable housing is being opened up in regional NSW as part of the NSW Government's $1.1 billion Social and Affordable Housing Fund (SAHF).
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said 20 new dwellings were recently built and have now been opened up to tenants in Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo and Mudgee.
"People west of the Blue Mountains are feeling the housing squeeze just as much as those in the city and on the coast. That's why we are committ
ed to increasing long-term affordable accommodation options right across the state," Mr Toole said.
"By working with specialist homelessness services to build affordable housing options, we are determined to ease cost of living pressures and make a real difference to the lives of those who need it most."
Minister for Families and Communities and Minister for Disability Services Natasha Maclaren-Jones said the $7.3 million investment will help to secure a brighter future for the people of NSW.
"Partnering with non-government organisations to deliver social and affordable housing is the key to unlocking a range of services which put a roof over the heads of people who really need it and at the same time helps people lead more independent lives," Mrs Maclaren-Jones said.
"We know that stable accommodation is vital for people to get back on their feet and access services and support to strive for a brighter future."
Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders said people flocking to the regions is placing strain on housing supplies.
"This region is an amazing place to live, work, and play, but sadly that's not always your experience when you don't have a roof over your head," Mr Saunders said.
"Whether it's building more affordable homes, or supporting councils to increase supply, it's vital we do everything we can to make sure people don't fall through the cracks."
The new dwellings have been built in partnership with specialist homelessness service provider, Housing Plus.
Housing Plus CEO David Fisher said this project provides both an economic and social boost to the Central West.
"These new homes are much-needed across regional NSW to help with the shortage of affordable houses," Mr Fisher said.
"Just as important is the support we are able to offer our new customers with any health, education and employment needs they may have."
The recently completed project includes:
· Two villas and six single-level duplexes in Bathurst
· Six single-level duplexes in Orange
· Four single-level duplexes in Dubbo
· Two single-level duplexes in Mudgee
The SAHF is a key initiative of Future Directions of Social Housing in NSW and is on track to deliver 3,486 homes across NSW.
