Horsham Rural City Council is calling on all political parties to commit to establishing a Mental Health and Wellbeing Local in Horsham, following the Liberal and Nationals' election commitment to deliver the service.
Mayor Brian Klowss welcomed the announcement and said the priority now was securing a commitment across the political spectrum.
"We welcome this commitment. It is something that is really needed in the Wimmera,"
"Now we are calling on all political parties to make the same commitment so that, regardless of the election result, the Wimmera gets the mental health services our community needs." he said.
Improved access to mental health services has been a key priority for the Wimmera Southern Mallee Council Alliance and an issue councils across the region have strongly advocated for.
"The Wimmera needs better access to mental health services close to home. This is an opportunity for all parties to recognise that need and commit to delivering this service for our region."
The Liberal and Nationals' commitment would establish a Mental Health and Wellbeing Local in Horsham, providing free treatment, care and support for those in the community experiencing mental health or wellbeing concerns.
People would be able to access the service without a referral and with no out-of-pocket costs.
The commitment includes funding for site acquisition or redevelopment, clinical and consultation spaces, fit-out, telehealth and facilities for consumers, families, carers and lived-experience workers, as well as ongoing running costs.
Mayor Klowss said securing better access to mental health services for the Wimmera should transcend party politics.
"This shouldn't be about politics. It should be about making sure people in the Wimmera can get help when they need it," he said.
