House Passes Second Tranche of Business Governance Reforms

Tasmanian Government

Eric Abetz, Treasurer

The Tasmanian Government's commitment to strengthening the governance of Government Business Enterprises (GBEs) and State-owned Companies (SOCs) has taken another major step, with the Government Business Governance Reforms Bill 2026 passing the House of Assembly.

Treasurer Eric Abetz said the second tranche of reforms are part of our plan to deliver a modern and consistent governance framework to ensure Government businesses continue to deliver in the best interests of Tasmanians.

"Government businesses manage significant public assets and provide essential services across our State," the Treasurer said.

"We have witnessed the consequences of failures of governance, and we are determined to ensure that this is not repeated.

"We have already delivered our initial tranche of reforms, ensuring more accountable, transparent and Tasmanian-focused Government businesses.

"This Bill will further strengthen accountability be ensuring there are clear mechanisms in place to address performance issues when they arise.

"We're delivering for Tasmania by ensuring that public assets are managed in the best interests of Tasmanians."

The Bill introduces further key reforms, including:

  • Establishing consistent, contemporary and appropriate arrangements across GBEs and SOCs;
  • Providing Shareholding Ministers with a range of options to address instances of poor performance; and
  • Enabling assurance reviews undertaken by independent experts or performance reviews undertaken by the Auditor-General where appropriate.
The Bill will now progress to the Legislative Council.
