Appointment of Parliamentary Budget Officer

The Presiding Officers are pleased to announce Dr Stein Helgeby has been appointed as the new Parliamentary Budget Officer for a four-year term from 18 November 2020.

Dr Helgeby brings extensive experience in public policy, fiscal policy, economic analysis and the Commonwealth budget framework to the role. Previously, he was a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Finance and has held a number of roles within the Commonwealth and Victorian Public Service.

The appointment will be made by the Presiding Officers under section 64X of the Parliamentary Service Act 1999.

As the Parliamentary Budget Officer, Dr Helgeby will be responsible for informing the Parliament by providing independent and non-partisan analysis of the budget cycle, fiscal policy the financial implications of proposals, post-election report and research.

This appointment was approved by the Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit.

We thank Ms Linda Ward and Mr Colin Brown for acting in the role of Parliamentary Budget Officer while the extensive search for a permanent appointment was undertaken.
