Attempted Armed Robbery, Traffic Crash in Hermit Park

The Townsville Tactical Crime Squad (TCS) and POLAIR arrested several people in relation to an attempted armed robbery and traffic crash in Hermit Park on 18 May.

It will be alleged around 3pm, a 23-year-old Garbutt man and a 21-year-old Kirwan man attempted to steal property from a parked trade vehicle.

A 44-year-old man attempted to intervene when the 23-year-old man produced a tomahawk and used it to assault him.

The two men and a 20-year-old Heatley woman allegedly fled the scene in a stolen Nissan Murano before colliding with three parked vehicles. The group then fled on foot.

Police further allege one of the offenders then forced entry into a house on Armstong Street, taking a knife and threatening the residents, before demanding car keys and money.

Both residents refused to comply, and the offender exited the house and met the two other suspects at the front of the address where it is alleged the knife was discarded on the driveway, and they fled on foot.

On 21 May, POLAIR observed a stolen Subaru Forester and red Haval in Garbutt.

The Subaru was subject to a tyre deflation device before it was abandoned at a carpark on Duckworth Street.

Police allege the 21-year-old man was armed with a sword and fled the Subaru with the 20-year-old Heatley woman, before both entered the Haval.

A short time later the Haval was intercepted by police and the 21-year-old man, and 20-year-old woman were arrested, along with a 24-year-old Stuart man and a 22-year-old Kirwan man.

That afternoon, TCS crews and POLAIR attended a Happy Valley address in relation to the 23-year-old man, and located a stolen Landcruiser and Isuzu D-Max.

POLAIR allegedly observed the 23-year-old man at the address, before he entered a vehicle and travelled to Woolcock Street, where he was taken into custody.

The 23-year-old Garbutt man was charged with one count each of attempted robbery, enter dwelling with intent, assaults occasioning bodily harm, and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The 21-year-old Kirwan man was charged with three counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, two counts of driving without a driver licence, and one count each of attempted robbery, enter dwelling with intent, possessing dangerous drugs, common assault, and stealing.

Both were remanded in custody to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on 24 July.

The 22-year-old Kirwan man was charged with one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The 24-year-old Stuart man was charged with a one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possess thing intendent for us in connection with offence, and driving of motor vehicle without a driver licence.

They were remanded in custody to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on 25 May.

The 20-year-old Heatly woman was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count of stealing.

She is due to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on 8 June.
