Continued membership of the IMO Council will enable Australia to contribute to decisions that influence maritime safety, environmental protection, international trade and seafarer welfare.

Australia's contribution
Australia has a long and proud history at the IMO and in 2027 will celebrate 75 years since joining the United Nations agency.
Through Australia's participation across IMO committees and sub-committees, we help shape international maritime standards, lead reform initiatives and work collaboratively with other Member States to develop practical and effective solutions to global maritime challenges.
Australia has also championed action on seafarer welfare, decarbonisation, marine plastic litter and support for Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States, while strengthening maritime capability and search and rescue cooperation throughout the Indian and Pacific Ocean regions.

The campaign launch coincides with World Maritime Day 2026.
The 2026-27 theme, From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence, recognises the importance of turning international standards and regulatory decisions into practical actions that tangible outcomes.
