Australian Indoor Bias Bowls National Championships begins in Devonport

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Education, Children and Youth

Hundreds of interstate competitors and locals will converge on Devonport for the next seven days to compete in the 52nd Australian Indoor Bias Bowls National Championships.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is a proud supporter of the National Championships, providing $10,000 through Events Tasmania's Championship Grant.

Our Government recognises the incredibly important role events play in our visitor economy.

Not only will this event promote the importance of sport and recreation, it will also showcase Tasmania's iconic North-West to hundreds of visitors, with more than 500 interstate competitors and their families travelling to the state.

There will also be 215 Tasmanians vying for the 12 National Titles.

We know events create a trigger for travel, promoting regional dispersal of visitors and generating fantastic stories and images that in turn increase people's desire to visit Tasmania.

And with more Tasmanians per capita employed in tourism than in any other state or territory, events like the Australian Indoor Bias Bowls National Championships play a role in supporting local jobs and our economy.

It was an honour to officially open the National Championships at the Devonport Reception Centre on Sunday.

I wish all the competitors the best of luck over the next week and we hope to see them all enjoying what our State has to offer.
