Four Australian high school students will be competing in the 2021 European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) on 9 to 15 April 2021, an international mathematics competition for young women. This is the fourth year that Australia will be represented and the second time the competition will be held virtually due to COVID disruption.
The Australian EGMO team was recently announced in a virtual announcement, and is made up of four mathematically talented young women:
- Eva Ge, Year 12, age 17, James Ruse Agricultural High School, NSW
- Mikaela Gray, Year 12, age 17, Brisbane State High School, QLD
- Ruiying Wu, Year 12, age 17, St Hilda's Anglican School for Girls, WA
- Elizabeth Yevdokimov, Year 12, age 17, St Ursula's College, QLD
Cloris Xu, Year 9, age 15, from Baulkham Hills High School was selected as the team's reserve.
The team were selected by the Australian Maths Trust's (AMT) mathematical Olympiad program and will be supported by the AMT throughout the virtual event. Australia's performance at EGMO has improved every year over the first three years (2018 – 2020), placing 20th, 14thand 12th respectively.
"We are so proud of the achievements of this year's EGMO team – it is wonderful to see how far these young women have come in their problem-solving journey. I'm so excited to see how they go this year," said EGMO Team Leader, Thanom Shaw. "We have a great mix of experience on the team, with Mikaela and Ruiying, returning for the second year in a row. Elizabeth was our team reserve last year and Eva was a team member in 2019. I wish the team all the best for the competition and look forward to seeing how they continue to grow and develop as problem solvers!"
