Ballina Intersection Upgrades Complete, Traffic Lights Activated

Traffic lights switched on as Ballina intersection upgrades complete

Two new sets of traffic lights have been switched on, marking the completion of two major intersection upgrades.

The traffic lights at the intersection of River Street and Brunswick Street were commissioned last Thursday evening.

This completes Stage 2 of the River Street Duplication, from Henry Philp Avenue to Tweed Street, which has included:

  • Westbound and eastbound lane duplication
  • Installation of traffic lights at the intersection of River Street and Brunswick Street
  • Installation of protected right-hand turns into Brunswick Street
  • Upgrade of stormwater services
  • Renewed pedestrian footpaths and crossing points.

Minor finishing works, including some landscaping, will occur over the next few weeks and the construction compound will be decommissioned.

The traffic lights at the intersection of Kerr Street and Bentinck Street were also commissioned Thursday evening. The Kerr and Bentinck Street intersection upgrade has included:

  • Installation of stormwater services
  • New kerb
  • Southbound and northbound lane duplication.
  • Installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Kerr Street and Bentinck Street, to improve safety and efficiency.
  • Installation of protected right-hand turns into Bentinck Street.
  • Improved pedestrian crossing points.

Minor finishing works will occur over the next few weeks including the western pedestrian kerb ramp.

By duplicating the southbound and northbound lanes between Swift and Russell Streets, this intersection upgrade has completed 'the missing link', resulting in dual lanes along Kerr Street from Tamarind Drive to River Street.

Transport for NSW will own and operate both sets of traffic lights.

Council thanks the community for their ongoing patience and understanding throughout these upgrades.
