Barcelona School of Economics turns twenty

The celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the Barcelona School of Economics, a research centre with UB participation, took place in the Historical Building. The event combined the institutional commemoration with the reflection on current economic issues.

The opening was held by the rectors of the UB and UAB, Joan Guàrdia and Javier Lafuente; the minister of Economy and Finance, Jaume Giró, and the president of IEB Foundation, Martí Parellada. The governor of Banco de España, Pablo Hernández de Cos, gave the closing conference, in which he analysed the current context regarding inflation and explained some of the guidelines the European monetary policy follows. He stressed that "the causes of inflation are global but they do not affect all economies in the same way", and that there has been "an important loss in the purchasing power of wages". He also commented on the possibility, according to some authors, that inflation is partly contained or reduced by the reversal of certain processes, such as globalization, which could be receding as a result of the pandemic or the war in Ukraine.
