Bayside City Council accepts Uluru Statement from Heart

Bayside City Council accepts the invitation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and supports a First Nations Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Australian Constitution.

At the August Council Meeting, Councillors unanimously voted to support this important step in Australia's reconciliation journey.

The Uluru Statement from the Heart is an invitation to the Australian people to work with First Nations people to create a better future.

It was presented at the 2017 National Constitutional Convention and was prepared at the First Nations Convention and read by member of the Referendum Council, Professor Megan Davis. The statement expressed the sentiment and feelings of our First Nations people seeking appropriate recognition in our constitution.

The Statement calls for structural reform including constitutional change- establishing a new relationship between First Nations and the Australian nation based on justice and self-determination where indigenous cultures and people can flourish as we all move forward.

Mayor Cr Laurence Evans said The Uluru Statement from the Heart is an incredibly important gift from Australia's First Nations people.

"It will help us address the past to allow us to grow as a compassionate, caring, respectful, honest and cohesive society," Cr Evans said.

"The understanding generated through the telling the truth will go some way to address systemic racism, with resulting actions not only embracing Indigenous Australians but all people from far and wide that call Australia home."

Bayside is in the second year of delivering on our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan.
