Bayside Libraries now offer Social Stories to support children and families to prepare for a library visit in advance.
Bayside Council Libraries are making visits more welcoming, inclusive and accessible for children and families with the introduction of new Library Social Stories across all Bayside library branches.
Designed to help children prepare for a library visit in advance, the easy-to-follow resources provide clear guidance about what to expect when visiting a Bayside library, helping create a calmer, more confident and positive experience for families.
The Social Stories were developed in consultation with Plumtree, an organisation specialising in early childhood disability support, together with Bayside Council's Disability Specialist.
Social Stories are a research-supported tool often used to assist autistic children and children with additional needs to better understand routines, transitions and unfamiliar environments. By providing clear expectations and visual guidance, they can help reduce anxiety and make everyday experiences feel more predictable, manageable and enjoyable.
Bayside's Library Social Stories use simple language, friendly visuals and step-by-step explanations to show children what they may see, hear and do during their visit. The guides explain library spaces, expected noise levels, borrowing books and items, and how to ask library staff for help if needed.
These practical resources are particularly valuable for children who benefit from structured routines and advance preparation, while also supporting families in building confidence and independence when visiting community spaces.
A dedicated Social Story is now available for each Bayside library branch, including Bexley North Library, Mascot Library, Arncliffe Library, Eastgardens Library, Rockdale Library and Sans Souci Library.
Library staff are also available to assist families during their visit, and community members are encouraged to speak with staff at the service desk if they require support.
