Boosting Competition in Oman's Building Materials Sector

Amid rapidly evolving economic and geopolitical challenges affecting global supply chains, shipping costs, and the prices of raw materials and energy, the need to develop more efficient and resilient markets has become increasingly important, particularly in vital sectors such as the building materials industry.

In this context, ESCWA, in collaboration with the Competition Protection and Monopoly Prevention Center at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion in Oman, convened a workshop on 9 and 10 June followed by several bilateral stakeholder consultations, as part of the ongoing study on the building materials sector in Oman.

Participants discussed the findings of the first phase of the study, which examined market structure, competition dynamics, and the main challenges facing the sector. They also contributed to the formulation of practical recommendations and identified priorities and actionable measures to enhance market efficiency, strengthen competition, and improve the business and investment environment in the sector.
