Brian Fath receives Board of Regents Faculty Award

Senior IIASA researcher and Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) Scientific Coordinator, Brian Fath, has received the 2022 University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in research, scholarship, and creativity.

The Board of Regents Faculty Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Board to recognize exemplary faculty achievement. The board annually presents up to 17 awards in five categories namely, mentoring; public service; research, scholarship, and creative activity; teaching; and innovation.

Fath is globally recognized in the fields of network analysis, ecosystems modeling, and sustainability. He first came to IIASA as a participant in the 1997 YSSP and has been a summer research scholar in the IIASA Advancing Systems Analysis Program since 2002. His work continues to contribute to the institute's activities in environmental systems modeling, specifically in the area of integrated modeling (ecological-economic networks). Since 2011, he has also been closely involved in shaping the next generation of systems analysts at IIASA in his role as YSSP scientific coordinator.

In addition to his long-standing association with IIASA, Fath is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Towson University, Maryland, USA, where he teaches courses in ecosystem ecology, environmental biology, networks, and human ecology and sustainability. Over the past three years, he has published extensively, including two books, 29 peer-reviewed articles, and edited two major reference works. His research papers were cited approximately 4,000 times, making him one of the most-cited faculty members at Towson University. He also gave 46 research presentations in 16 countries. In fall 2019, he held a prestigious Fulbright Distinguished Chair position in sustainability in the Czech Republic. Fath also recently founded a new journal, Current Research in Environmental Sustainability, while maintaining significant public service and teaching commitments.

The award will be presented at a special breakfast ceremony, as well as during the public session of the full board meeting at Towson University on Friday, 29 April 2022.
