Bringing art to streets

Photo: Artist, James MacSporran, will be applying his artistic talents to Fitzgerald Street in South Yarra

The Chapel Street end of Fitzgerald Street in South Yarra is being transformed into a work of art by artist James MacSporran, who will draw on his imagination and flair to turn the road into a brightly coloured, street art inspired mural.

Over two days on 15 and 16 December, James will be applying his talents to the road pavement, creating an eye-catching entry statement to the recently created pop-up parklet.

The new mural is a continuation of James' abstract investigations collectively titled From the Streets. Highly influenced by urban scenes, street culture and graffiti the mural will be vibrant, abstract response to the energy and colour of the iconic Chapel Street precinct.

Until March 2021, the site of his latest commission - Fitzgerald Street - is being turned into a car free space with pop-up gardens, lots of greenery, street furniture and plenty of shade.

This project is one of a number of activations the City of Stonnington is rolling out to create opportunities for the local community to meet and enjoy their neighbourhoods in relaxing new way.

About the Artist

Melbourne-born James takes his inspiration from trains and cityscapes. His art is a blend of abstract and graffiti which results in fluoro-coloured and densely layered artworks that he creates from his imagination. Often overlaying text with abstraction, his work conjures references to mazes, street art and old-style arcade games.

MacSporran has worked at Arts Project since 2016. He's regularly exhibited in group shows in Australia and has also been shown in New York and Hong Kong. His work is held in private collections.

About Arts Project Australia

Arts Project Australia is an agile contemporary arts organisation that supports artists with an intellectual disability by promoting their work and advocating for their inclusion in contemporary art practice. For 46 years, Arts Project has developed a world-class studio and gallery program for Australian artists that engender meaningful, professional and lasting careers in the arts. Artists of all ages and capabilities are mentored by professional artists and staff who link them and their work to the contemporary art sector and the broader community. They have nurtured hundreds of people to become accomplished artists with countless exhibitions and professional development opportunities under their belt.

Currently, Arts Project Australia support 150 artists at all stages of their professional career, and their wellbeing and creative practice is at the centre of all they do. The organisation provides a safe, supportive space for artists to work and realise their full artistic potential. Individual artists have the scope to explore various mediums including digital art, photography, animation, stop-motion, sculpture, printmaking, painting and drawing, as well as artist zines. Their gallery representation then gains national and international exhibition, professional development and commercial opportunities for artists. Over time, artists have become role models for other marginalised creatives to have the confidence to realise their own artistic goals.
