San Francisco, USA, 1 May 2023 - The World Economic Forum Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution convened leading industry, academic and government experts to explore generative AI systems' technical, ethical and societal implications at a three-day meeting, Responsible AI Leadership: A Global Summit on Generative AI, in San Francisco, 26-28 April.
"The development of generative AI systems represents a significant technological advance, with enormous potential to transform our world for the better. However, it is critical that we address the potential risks associated with these systems and work collaboratively to create a framework for responsible development and deployment. The time for action is now, before the window of opportunity for guiding the technology closes," said Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman, World Economic Forum.
The aim of the summit was to positively impact the development of generative AI with a set of practical, actionable recommendations for stakeholders in research, industry, policy and regulation, derived from the collective intelligence gathered at the summit. Participants deliberated on several key recommendations that stakeholders can use to promote the responsible development and deployment of generative AI systems.
These include:
- Increasing transparency through mechanisms including identity and provenance labelling and clear communications regarding AI models' limitations and use of data
- Promoting accountability through a multi-layered approach of measurement, evaluation, data tracing, auditing and diverse red-teaming collaboration to ensure quality and safety across AI model and applications deployment
- Ensuring global access and participation through digital inclusion and the creation of new resource centres focused on greater sharing of resources such as data and computing
- Fostering collaboration and open innovation including best practice sharing, improving education and capacity-building, and development of shared terminology
The event concluded with a commitment to continue working together to address key challenges in generative AI and promote shared progress.
