Byron Shire Council is seeking expressions of interest from curators, consultants and creative practitioners to develop a Public Art Scoping Study for the Cavanbah (Byron Bay) Foreshore.

Following the adoption of Byron Foreshore Landscape Concept Plans, which identified culture and history as foundational elements, the study will provide a strategic vision for public art along the foreshore.

The study will explore how public art can strengthen connection to place and Country, while celebrating and sharing local stories, culture and heritage. And recognise the deep and continuing connection of the Bundjalung of Byron Bay Arakwal People to the Byron Foreshore.

Applicants will be required to develop a curatorial vision, identify opportunities and potential sites for public art, consider both temporary and permanent approaches, and provide a framework for community consultation and future public art initiatives.

"The scoping study is not about delivering a predetermined outcome. It's an opportunity to explore ideas and consider how public art could enrich the foreshore experience," said Marisa Snow, Byron Shire Council's Acting Arts and Culture Officer.

"We're looking for innovative ideas that enhance the community and visitor experience along one of Australia's most recognisable coastlines, while taking into consideration its incredible natural beauty and fragile marine environment.

"Applicants will need to demonstrate experience in public art strategy, planning or curatorial practice, outline their methodology, provide a framework for artist-led consultation and include a budget breakdown," she said.
