Calling All 'deadly' Creatives: Share Your Art This NAIDOC

Gunnedah Shire Council

Fifty years of 'Deadly' will be showcased in Gunnedah Shire's annual NAIDOC Week Art Exhibition.

Artists, hobbyists, schools, organisations and individuals are encouraged to come together and explore this year's National NAIDOC Week theme by submitting art in any medium for the annual exhibition that celebrates our First Nations peoples.

Bundjalung/Gomeroi woman and emerging artist Hollie Crawford is running a workshop for First Nations women to assist them to create a work of art for submission. The workshop on Saturday, 9 May from 10am to 2pm is free for First Nations women but is limited to 12 places. Materials will be provided, and no experience is necessary.

The workshop, facilitated through Arts North West, is funded by the Australian Government's Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support Program. To book, visit The Civic website: www.thecivic.com.au/art--exhibitions

Gunnedah Shire Council's Cultural Precinct Team Leader Danny Hankinson said 50 years of National NAIDOC Week (5-12 July) was a significant achievement and should be celebrated.

"I hope to see everyone getting involved in this year's exhibition - from the young in our daycare centres, to the elderly in our community - to showcase a rich and vibrant culture that is woven through the continuum of time," he said.

"One of the fantastic things about the NAIDOC exhibition is the range of mediums that are used to tell this story - everything from weaving to wood etching to metal work - and of course, the traditional art of dot painting and decorated didgeridoos.

"I encourage locals to start thinking about what they can submit to this special community exhibition."

Exhibition entries can be submitted from 9am on Monday, 22 June to 3pm on Sunday, 28 June. All artworks should be delivered with a completed Artist Submission Form to the Gunnedah Bicentennial Creative Arts Gallery, ready to hang.

To download an Artist Submission Form, visit www.thecivic.com.au/art--exhibitions.

The NAIDOC Art Exhibition will open at 1pm on Friday, 3 July at the Gallery, and will continue open until Friday, 7 August.
