Commonwealth Home Support Program Extended to 2029

Department of Health

The aged care sector has recently undergone significant change, including the Aged Care Act 2024. Continued refinements are needed to ensure quality services are provided to older people living in Australia.

Support at Home has been designed to respond to the challenges of an ageing population, including a range of services, such as everyday living support and personal care services, to help older people live independently at home for longer.

CHSP provides entry-level support, such as domestic assistance, transport, meal delivery or social support. It is a valued program, essential to aged care in Australia. However, improvement is required to meet the demands of our ageing population.

Feedback for long-term design

We will begin consultation this year on the future of CHSP, entry-level services and in-home support, including how entry-level aged care services are funded into the future and the role of block funded services.

The consultation will focus on:

  • maintaining a sustainable entry-level in-home aged care program
  • ensuring fair and equitable contributions to the costs of home care
  • how early intervention services can reduce pressure across the system
  • a seamless path to more complex in-home care services, residential care or other aged care options as a person's needs change.
