From wagging tails to growing blooms, Camden Council has accepted a tender for construction of the Camden Animal Rehoming Centre and Community Nursery.
At last week's Ordinary Meeting, Council accepted the tender provided by Baseline Projects Pty Ltd for construction services for the new facility for approximately $11.8 million.
The Animal Rehoming Centre works will include:
- A purpose-built animal shelter including adoption viewing areas with meet and greet spaces;
- Animal housing designed in accordance with shelter medicine principles, sustainable design and Capacity for Care modelling;
- Designated exercise yards, enrichment spaces and a walking track;
- Reception area, staff workspaces and public amenities; and
- A multipurpose function room that will offer community outreach programs.
The Community Nursery will include:
· Converting an industrial area into a community nursery to be used to nurture native species to be used in landscaping and restoration projects delivered by Council; and
· Structured volunteer opportunities in conjunction with partnering organisations and groups.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said the project has been in the pipeline for a number of years.
"Council endorsed the site at 55 Topham Road in Smeaton Grange for the purpose of Camden's future animal care facility at its meeting of 13 July 2021. This enabled planning of the facility to commence," she said.
"In 2023, Council secured funding through the NSW Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program to deliver a new Animal Rehoming Centre and Community Nursery. Council also engaged the services of Sam Crawford Architect's Pty Ltd to complete the detailed design in line with the accepted scope.
"It's very exciting to now take another step forward with this project. I look forward to seeing this project take form and have a beautiful and lasting impact on our community."
The tenders were assessed by the Tender Evaluation Panel, in accordance with Council's Procurement Procedures and Guidelines (2019).
The $10 million Animal Rehoming Centre and the $4 million Community Nursery projects are proudly funded by the NSW Government's Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program.
