The City of Canada Bay will introduce a new Food Organics & Garden Organics (FOGO) recycling service from July 2027, helping households divert food waste from landfill.
The new service will allow residents to place food scraps in their green-lidded bin together with garden waste for recycling. As part of the change, collections of green-lidded bins will increase to weekly instead of fortnightly, and all other waste collection services will remain the same - red-lidded bins will continue to be collected weekly and yellow-lidded bins fortnightly.
PHASE 1: July 2027 - detached houses and select multi-unit properties (including some low-rise apartment buildings, units and townhouses) start FOGO.
PHASE 2: 2029 - all other remaining apartment buildings start FOGO.

As part of the rollout, green-lidded wheelie bins will be upgraded to new FOGO-ready bins in early 2027. Every participating household will also receive a kitchen caddy, a supply of certified compostable liners and practical information to help make the transition simple.
"We're delighted to soon be offering a FOGO collection service to residents, and we're committed to making the change as easy as possible. I am happy to confirm to residents that, alongside this increase in service to your green bin, your other waste collection services will continue as normal," City of Canada Bay Mayor Michael Megna said.
"Residents will receive everything they need to get started, along with clear information and ongoing support. With a few simple changes in the kitchen, every household can play a part in reducing waste and supporting a more circular economy."
The new service is a significant step towards Council's goal of reducing waste sent to landfill by 20% per person by 2030 and creating a more sustainable community.
"Food waste makes up more than a third of the average household garbage bin, yet it's a valuable resource that could be saved from landfill," added Mayor Megna. "FOGO will make it easier for residents to recycle everyday food scraps, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and turn organic material into compost for parks and gardens, delivering a practical, lasting environmental benefit for our community."
