Cardiff University has been ranked as one of the top institutions in the world for its commitment, across its activities, to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 17 SDGs are a shared blueprint adopted by member states in 2015 to tackle key global challenges including environmental degradation and climate change, gender and economic inequalities and poverty and ill health.
The 2023 THE Impact Rankings table ranks Cardiff 52nd out of 1591 institutions worldwide – a significant increase on its 2022 ranking when Cardiff was placed in the 101-200band out of 1410 institutions.
This year, Cardiff has four SDGs in the top 50:
SDG14: Life Below Water – 6th and the first top-ten ranking for the University
SDG15: Life on Land – 11th
SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production – 24th
SDG3: Good Health and Wellbeing – 31st
Professor Damian Walford Davies, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, who leads on the University's sustainability work said: "Our research, teaching and day-to-day activities are improving lives and environments on our doorstep and around the world.
"To be recognised for our actions to secure a healthy, resilient and more equal society that acts as a responsible steward of our planet is rewarding.
"It means that students, partners and others in our community and internationally can be sure of our commitment to global sustainability."
