City comes to life thanks to $2 million boost for arts and culture

More than $2 million has been committed by the City of Perth to arts activity and creative cultural practice to grow the City's vibrant events calendar.

On Tuesday night, the Council voted to support 13 arts and culture projects to the tune of $1.095 million, including some over a three-year period.

Crowd favourite Fringe World will receive $1.2 million from the City of Perth over the next three years.

City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said arts and culture are crucial parts of our strategy to attract people from across WA into the heart of Perth and to ensure the City of Light is a vibrant and exciting place to live, work and visit.

"Arts and culture are vital elements of city life as they engage, challenge and surprise people. Once visitors are here, they support our local businesses by having a meal at a restaurant or café, grabbing a drink at one of our great range of bars and pubs or doing some shopping in one of our unique retail outlets ," he said.

"No matter what you're interested in, you'll find something to do and see in the City of Light."

The 13 local arts and cultural organisations who were supported with $1.095 million include:

PICA – PICA Connect ($180,000 over three years)

The Blue Room Theatre – 2023 Program ($60,000)

West Australian Ballet Company –Join us in the spotlight – welcoming diverse audiences to ballet in the city ($60,000)

St Jerome's Laneway Pty Ltd – St Jerome's Laneway Festival ($35,000)

The Lester Prize – The Lester Prize 2022 exhibition season ($60,000)

Barking Gecko Theatre Company – Performances of The Snow ($30,000)

West Australian Music Industry Association – WA Music Month ($60,000)

STRUT Dance – 10 duets on a theme of Rescue ($30,000)

Co3 –Sector Pathways Program ($25,000)

West Australian Opera – Carmen at the WACA ($60,000)

Premiere Events Perth - for Christmas on the Terrace ($15,000)

AWESOME Arts Australia – 2023-25 AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things ($360,000 over three years)

Western Australian Symphony Orchestra – Family Christmas Spectacular ($120,000)
