City Nature Challenge wrap-up

This year's City Nature Challenge was bigger and better than ever before! This worldwide Biodiversity event ran from 28 April to 1 May and was designed to encourage people from all walks of life to get involved with their environment and undertake some citizen science using the iNaturalist app.

Featuring 28 different Councils around greater Melbourne, a total of 18,579 observations were made by 846 participants, identifying 2,248 different species.

Of these Knox achieved 830 observations by 67 participants, identifying 292 different species.

From a competition viewpoint, this put Knox in 7th place for observations, 9th place for species identified and 2nd place for number of participants. A fantastic result overall!

Some of the most observed species in Knox included:

  • Pacific black duck
  • Large spotted ladybird
  • Hop Goodenia (native plant)
  • Australian magpie
  • Family Hymenochecea (fungi)
  • Chestnut teal duck
  • Crimson rosella
