The City of Swan has released its first Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), confirming an ongoing commitment to building a just, equitable and reconciled Australia.

Endorsed by Reconciliation Australia on March 29, 2022, the RAP outlines 17 key practical actions designed to strengthen respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, build a culture of respect, and implement work practices that promote equity and opportunity for all.

Examples of these practices include improving consultation with First Nations communities, preparing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment and retention strategy, and developing cultural and naming protocols.

The implementation of the RAP will be guided by a Reconciliation Action Plan Advisory Group, consisting of City Councillors, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community members, and Non-Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community members who are interested or involved in reconciliation.

Anthony Culbong, Co-chair of the Reconciliation Action Plan Advisory Group, said the completion of the RAP was a significant milestone for the City. "The plan is a reflection of the City's commitment to improving relationships and its mutual understanding of the Aboriginal community," said Mr Culbong.

City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said by releasing the RAP, the City acknowledged its role in truth telling about the history of colonisation to reconcile the story of Australia.

"To create a better future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander peoples, we must confront the realities of the past and present, while celebrating a stronger, shared future with equal opportunities for

all," said Mayor Lucas.

"The RAP is another step forward on our ongoing journey to reconciliation. We're proud and excited to work with First Nations peoples and the wider community to bring the plan's actions to life over the coming years."
