City Partners Join Forces for Apprenticeship and Traineeship Support Forum

The City of Greater Geelong will partner with the Gordon (Workforce Australia Local Jobs, Skilling the Bay) in hosting a forum aimed at boosting an interest in apprenticeships across the Geelong region.

The Apprenticeship and Traineeship Support Forum is aimed at maximising apprenticeship and traineeship participation, increasing retention rates, and assisting in meeting labour shortages in the region by providing employment opportunities.

The event will be hosted by the City of Greater Geelong on the podium level of its Civic Precinct, Wurriki Nyal, 137 - 149 Mercer St, Geelong.

The forum will be held over three hours from 4.00pm, on Wednesday 31 May, and comprise three separate components:

Session 1: Would you like to be an apprentice or trainee?

Time: 4:00pm to 5:00pm (45-minute panel discussion, 15-minute Q&A)

An information session for prospective apprentices and trainees (and their families) to learn about apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities.

Session 2: Find the opportunities available

Time: 5:00pm to 6:00pm (60-minute session)

A networking session for individuals interested in an apprenticeship or traineeship to meet apprenticeship providers, group training organisations and employers to learn about the opportunities available.

Session 3: Thinking of hiring an apprentice

Time: 6:00pm to 7:00pm (45-minute panel discussion, 15-minute Q&A)

A targeted session for small to medium employers considering hiring an apprentice or trainee, including incentives and support available for employers.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

The City is delighted to be able to host an event of this kind, designed to support both businesses and individuals across the region.

A forum like this may prove to be a significant turning point in a young man or woman's life as it has the very real potential to spark an interest in a trade-based career path.

Along with supporting people at an individual level, it's hoped this forum will contribute to increasing the number of local apprentices which will in turn assist small to medium businesses when tendering for work on new infrastructure projects within the City of Greater Geelong.

Councillor Kylie Grzybek - Chair of the Strong Local Economy portfolio

I support Mayor Sullivan in urging businesses to consider the value of participating in the forum.

An event of this nature will be enormously helpful to small medium enterprises and sole traders in assisting them understand the opportunities, benefits, responsibilities, and process of taking on an apprentice or trainee.

The forum will assist business owners across the region to understand that there are numerous incentives available to employers, along with the possibility of ongoing support when taking on an apprentice or trainee.
