Community Engagement Works Best

The value of the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services' Community Resilience and Engagement Command (CREC) has once again been demonstrated, this time using its connections to locate a missing girl in Alice Springs.

The 14-year-old girl was reported missing on Tuesday 8 November by her mother, who was concerned for her welfare as she had not been seen since Wednesday 2 November.

The CREC Southern team were contacted by Strike Force Viper yesterday, seeking assistance with talking to local community members regarding the whereabouts of the girl.

CREC coordinated a response amongst Aboriginal Liaison Officers in Alice Springs, commencing with the last place the girl had been seen, and spoke with family and community members.

The girl was located safe and well within an hour and was taken to her mother's place of residence.

Executive Director of the Community Resilience and Engagement Command, Karen Elligett said "the CREC Southern team in Alice Springs has a vast knowledge of local Aboriginal people and families in Alice Springs and surrounding communities including strong community relationships which greatly assists with these type of jobs.

"The team is very proud of the work it does to serve and protect the community. The value of engaging with our communities cannot be understated. Finding this missing girl so quickly once CREC became involved is testament to the important work CREC members perform."
