Chunjiang An, associate professor at the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science and Concordia Research Chair in Spill Response and Remediation, has received the 2026 Mehran Alaee Early Career Researcher Award from the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC).

The award recognizes outstanding early-career researchers who have made distinguished contributions to environmental chemistry or environmental chemical engineering. An was honoured for his leadership in oil and plastic pollution control and his innovative approach to sustainable remediation.

Since joining Concordia in 2018, An has established an internationally recognized research program in the Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering. The program integrates environmental chemistry and engineering to advance spill response and pollution reduction. He has secured more than $9 million in competitive research funding, supervised over 70 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, published more than 240 peer-reviewed journal papers and organized major international events such as the International Oil Spill Science Conference 2022 and the PEOPLE Conference 2023.

Earlier this year, An also received the Leadership and Advocacy for Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity and Accessibility (EDIA) Award from the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE), recognizing his community-engaged research with Indigenous partners across Canada.

The Chemical Institute of Canada is a national organization representing Canada's chemical sciences community. Its awards highlight research excellence and the impact of chemistry and engineering on society.
