Construction Milestone In New Women And Babies Hospital

  • Foundation works begin on new Women and Babies Hospital
  • Construction has also started on the first of two new multi-deck car parks within the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct
  • New multi-storey car park to deliver 1,500 bays for staff by mid-2027
  • Transformational project part of the Cook Government's commitment to ensuring Western Australians have access to the healthcare they need, when they need it

The new Women and Babies Hospital and the first of two new multi-deck car parks have both reached a major construction milestone with piling works underway.

On the hospital site, three 120-tonne piling rigs will bore approximately 420 foundation piles, each 1.2 metres in diameter and between 16 to 24 metres deep.

Approximately 2,000 cubic metres of concrete will also be used for 149 foundation piles bored at depths between 14 to 21 metres on the western car park site.

The piles will support the structure of the hospital and western car park.

Once piling is complete, concrete foundations and above-ground structures will be built for the hospital and car park.

This marks a major milestone for the New Women and Babies Hospital Project that is set to expand services and choice for women, newborns and families across Western Australia.

The new 12-storey hospital within the Fiona Stanley precinct will include:

  • inpatient facilities for gynaecology and maternity patients;
  • a neonatology unit for newborns needing specialised care;
  • operating theatres;
  • a family birth centre; and
  • outpatient clinics.

The $1.8 billion Women and Babies Hospital Project is being delivered by Webuild, and includes a major expansion of Osborne Park Hospital to provide enhanced services for women in Perth's northern suburbs.

The new six-storey western car park at the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct is being built by Georgiou Group at the intersection of Winch Way and Jennalup Street.

It will provide approximately 1,500 staff parking bays and include a footbridge on the second level linking to an adjacent car park.

Providing additional staff car parking will be key to accommodating the growth of the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct as the new Women and Babies Hospital takes shape.

Planning is also underway for a second multi-deck car park within the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct.

Three temporary car parks have been opened to support Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct workers during construction of the hospital and western car park.

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"By consolidating parking and improving access, we're ensuring the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct is future-proofed so it can continue to serve the community and its staff as it grows.

"The new multi-deck staff car park will provide around 1,500 parking bays and will be supported by local road changes on Jennalup Street and Winch Way once completed in mid-2027.

"Piling works are now underway marking a key milestone in the delivery of this new multi-deck car park, which will improve connectivity for the hardworking staff within this growing precinct as the new Women and Babies Hospital takes shape.

"Planning is underway for a second multi-deck car park and wider traffic changes are also under investigation to support connectivity throughout the wider Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct."

Comments attributed to Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey:

"Our government is delivering WA's biggest ever hospital building program, including a brand new Women and Babies Hospital.

"The start of piling for the new Women and Babies Hospital marks a major step forward in delivering state-of-the-art healthcare facilities for women, newborns and families.

Comments attributed to Health Minister Meredith Hammat:

"This an exciting milestone for health services across Western Australia, with construction rapidly progressing on the new hospital and car park.
