Consultation Opens on Melrose Street Closure Partially

The proposed partial closure of a section of Melrose Street could create opportunities for community connection, pedestrian and cyclist access and safety, and may also contribute towards increasing foot traffic to local businesses.

We asked our community about this idea for Sandringham Village in September/October 2022 and found that views were polarised, with 42% strongly supporting and 39% strongly opposing. The top future aspirations for the space were places to sit down and eat or have a coffee, for entertainment or events, and for pop-up shops or footpath trading.

After considering community feedback, Council decided to commence a statutory community engagement process to consider a temporary partial road closure of part of Melrose Street from November 2023 for a maximum of six months.

The aim of a temporary partial road closure is to help the community experience the area as public open space on a trial basis, while enabling greater understanding of impacts, including on traffic and parking.
