Coronavirus update 19 April

Jeremy Rockliff,Premier

Minister for Health

Tasmania recorded 1418 new COVID cases overnight, up slightly from yesterday, meaning we have 8953 total active cases.

There has also been 1834 people recovered and released from isolation, with more than 113,000 people now recovered since December.

There are currently 47 people in hospital with COVID and of these, 22 are being treated specifically for COVID. There is currently one person being cared for in the ICU.

Tasmania has seen an increase in the number of COVID cases across the State over the last month, largely due to the impact of the highly transmissible BA2 strain of Omicron.

However, the last seven days has seen a plateau in case numbers, and we expect to see a corresponding fall in the number of people in hospital with COVID over the next few weeks.

I encourage Tasmanians to continue to follow COVID-safe behaviours of practicing good hand hygiene, following social distancing, testing when you have symptoms, staying home when you are unwell and wearing masks where required to do so.

And as we head into winter, please, continue to roll the sleeve up and get your vaccination or your booster if it's due, to keep yourself and the community safe.

Tasmanians can also protect themselves by getting the flu vaccine from GPs and pharmacies, and we encourage everyone to do so, particularly those with younger children who have not experienced a flu season.

Having your flu vaccine is a quick and easy process that can help protect you and your family this winter – and I can attest to this firsthand, having received mine at a pharmacy this morning.
