Cost of living tops Tasmanians' concerns

Tasmanian Labor

The cost of living is now the number one issue in the state with almost three quarters of Tasmanians showing extreme or moderate concern, a new report from 3P Advisory shows.

The report shows confidence across the community is evaporating, with Tasmanians saying they are worse off than 12 months ago, and that they expect economic and social conditions to be much worse in 12 months' time.

The financial strain households are currently under can also be seen in the rapid decline in confidence in major purchases, now at minus 28 per cent. This is bad news for Tasmanian businesses too.

After groceries, power prices are where households are feeling the most pressure. The Liberal Government's own broken promise is now costing families an additional $227 a year due to their 12 per cent power price rise.

Renters are doing it tough across the board, while homeowners are feeling the pinch from the Government's big increase to water bills.

While the Liberal Government is focusing on a $750 million-dollar floating stadium in Hobart, the Tasmanian Labor Party has been out on the ground listening to the community and getting our priorities right.

This was evident with the election of Pembroke MLC Luke Edmunds, who heard firsthand that cost of living and electricity prices were far and away the biggest issue for households and families.

Jeremy Rockliff is running a Government that is out of touch with Tasmanians, prioritising the wrong things and not getting the basics right for the Tasmanian economy.
