Colac Otway Shire Council has endorsed a feasibility study that sets a clear path for the future of football (soccer) in the region, paving the way for a new Colac Soccer Hub for the region.

Council's decision reflects strong community support and recognises the rapid growth in demand for soccer across the Shire. The study found that a shortage of suitable playing facilities and supporting infrastructure is limiting participation and the health and wellbeing benefits the sport provides.

Mayor Jason Schram and Councillors unanimously supported the feasibility study, highlighting the strength of local advocacy and collaboration. In March, Cr Schram and Chief Executive Officer Andrew Tenni joined representatives from Colac Otway Rovers Football Club and Football Victoria to advocate for the project at the Victorian Parliament.

"The Colac Soccer Hub has been identified as a priority project in Council's 2026 advocacy priorities. The proposed facility will help meet current and future demand, support club development and create opportunities for more people to get involved in the game", Mayor Schram said.

The study included a comprehensive analysis of soccer participation, facilities and future needs across the Shire.

The draft study was placed on public exhibition for six weeks, and the community response was overwhelmingly positive, with all submissions supporting the study's findings and recommendations.

The study outlines a strategic and staged approach to delivering facilities that meet the needs of clubs and the wider community now and into the future.

The former Colac High School site has been identified as the location for the hub, based on its accessibility, capacity, co-location opportunities and ability to cater for long-term growth.

The decision comes at a time of strong momentum for the local game. Football Victoria recently named Colac Otway Rovers AFC as its May Club Changer of the Month, recognising the club's resilience, growth and leadership within regional Victoria.

Council will now use the endorsed study to guide planning, partnerships and advocacy efforts to bring the Colac Soccer Hub to life and support continued growth of soccer in Colac Otway.

The feasibility study was made possible through funding from the Victorian Government's 2023–24 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund, which contributed $40,000, alongside Council's $20,000 contribution.
