Witnesses have stepped in and restrained a man who tried to flee from a multi-vehicle collision in Berwick on Saturday.
Police attended the Princes Freeway scene following multiple calls to Triple Zero (000) about an erratic driver who was seen speeding and weaving across lanes about 11am.
The vehicle merged into the emergency lane - inbound - before it crashed into a barrier and then two cars.
A man and woman from one of the vehicles took the brunt of the collision, with the passenger mechanically trapped for some time.
The woman, who is aged in her 80s, was transported to hospital with critical injuries. The driver was lucky to escape without injury.
The driver of the allegedly speeding vehicle was seen trying to collect his belongings from the damaged car before he asked another motorist to call his phone.
Once located he started to run from the scene before he was restrained by good Samaritans.
The 34-year-old Pascoe Vale man was arrested and will be interviewed by Casey Highway Patrol who are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
