Long-serving volunteers across The Hills Shire have been recognised for their exceptional dedication during National Volunteer Week.

National Volunteer Week 2026 took place from 18 to 24 May to celebrate the invaluable role volunteers play in building a stronger, more connected community.

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne, praised the remarkable commitment of local volunteers, acknowledging their vital contribution to the community services that rely on their ongoing support.

"They say not all heroes wear capes, and I couldn't agree more - some wear high-vis vests, gardening gloves, and straw hats," Mayor Byrne said.

"Over the past year, our volunteers have achieved so much. The Hills Youth Army has reached record numbers, the Friends of the Library have raised over $5,000, and our Hills Community Care volunteers have delivered an incredible 15,500 meals to those in need.

"I'd also like to acknowledge the volunteers that tirelessly dedicate themselves to our community outside of Council's volunteer network, like the SES who work around the clock to keep our residents safe.

"I'm incredibly proud that our volunteering rate is well above the state average. It speaks to the character of The Hills as a community that is devoted to putting others first."

Among those honoured at Council's Volunteer Service Awards Ceremony was long-time volunteer Lindsay McEwan who celebrated 10 years of service as a Justice of the Peace volunteer. Since the start of this year, Council's Justice of the Peace volunteers have served over 1,300 clients and attended to over 4,000 documents.

"In volunteering, I feel so enriched with the thanks offered by people in appreciation for my time and efforts, and the personal reward and satisfaction felt in serving others," Mr McEwan said.

"I would encourage anyone considering volunteering their time to have a go. You'll be surprised by how much you will enjoy the experience and look forward to the next occasion to serve."

Council volunteers were also invited to a Trivia Night where the team Flash Four, which consisted of volunteers from Bushcare, Hills Community Care, and the Community Environment Centre, took home the ultimate bragging rights for winning trivia.

Council supports a wide range of volunteer opportunities, including Bushcare, Community Environment Centre, Hills Youth Army, Friends of The Hills Library, Meals on Wheels, Bidjiwong Community Nursery, Events, Justice of the Peace, and more.
