Hobsons Bay City Council will continue its push for community consultation on the level crossing removal project on the Werribee line.

At their recent meeting (November 15), Councillors voted unanimously that Council:

  1. Writes to the Minister for Transport Infrastructure expressing its disappointment about the lack of consultation by the Victorian Government on the proposed closure of Champion Road in Newport/Williamstown as part of the level crossing removal program, while also welcoming the related announcements, including the proposed redevelopment of the Spotswood train station and the removal of other level crossings in Hobsons Bay on the Werribee line.
  2. Seeks an urgent meeting with the Level Crossing Removal Authority to discuss the issue.

"I have raised our concerns directly with local MP Melissa Horne and welcome her commitment to community consultation and her advocacy for the best road options for our community," Mayor of Hobsons Bay, Cr Tony Briffa, said

"Ms Horne has advised that consultation will start next year, with the level crossings to be removed by 2030. This means there will be plenty of time to get this right.

"Many people will recall that the community was also very concerned with the original designs for the removal of the level crossings in Williamstown North and Laverton.

"However, the designs changed considerably following community consultation and advocacy from Council and I believe we can achieve a similar outcome in this case."
