Council Welcomes $9.5 Million Investment

Communities in the southern Murray-Darling Basin, including Griffith, will benefit from 14 new major infrastructure, community and economic development projects announced today, valued at $69 million, along with the opening of the next $50 million grant round.

Round 2 of the Sustainable Communities Program, funded by the Albanese Government and delivered by the Minns Government, will support job creation, workforce participation and long-term resilience as the region adjusts to the impacts of the Australian Government's water recovery program.

A total of 14 new projects worth $69 million have been announced today under Round 2 of the Sustainable Communities Program, alongside the opening of a further $50 million grant round.

Griffith City Council has secured funding for two major projects:

  • $3.96 million for the Griffith Livestock Marketing Centre Renewal – Shade, Sustainability and Regional Strength, featuring a new permanent steel skillion roof over priority sale yard pens, improved amenities, and future solar integration provisions as part of Stage 1 of a broader master plan
  • $5.56 million for the Boorga Road Widening and Enhancement Project, supporting the Lake Wyangan housing precinct through design and construction of key road infrastructure between Mallinson Road and the village.

Federal Minister for the Environment and Water Murray Watt said:

"The Albanese Government is backing communities in the southern Murray-Darling Basin with targeted investment to create jobs, stimulate growth, and strengthen long-term resilience."

Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said, the funding would deliver important local benefits.

"This investment will help deliver critical infrastructure for our growing community while also supporting local jobs and long-term economic resilience. Council is pleased to see these projects progressing with support from both the Australian and NSW Governments," Mayor Curran said.

Applications are now open for the next $50 million Business and Industry grant round, with eligible Murray–Darling Basin businesses encouraged to apply. Applications close 3 August at 12pm. To apply for the Business and Industry Round and for program updates, visit www.nsw.gov.au/scp
