Crash Leads to Drug Bust, $74K Seized in Riverina

A man has been charged with multiple driving and drug offences, and police have seized more than $74,000 cash, from a car stopped in the state's Riverina yesterday.

Officers attached to Riverina Highway Patrol were patrolling the Hume Highway at Tumblong about 2pm yesterday (Tuesday 12 May 2026), when they detected a driver allegedly travelling 145km/h in a 110km/h signposted area.

Officers directed the 27-year-old male driver to stop and subjected him to a roadside drug test which allegedly retuned a positive result for methamphetamine and cocaine; however, police will allege the man then accelerated from the scene, crossing to the wrong side of the road.

Officers following the vehicle were assisted by passing truck drivers who provided updates via the UHF radio network. A short time later, police were advised the car had crashed near the Hume Highway exit at Coolac.
