Crime Rates Plummet Under Finocchiaro CLP Rule

NT Government

House break-ins in the Territory have fallen 23% in 12 months under the Finocchiaro CLP Government after rising 63% during seven years of the former Labor government.

Overall crime rates are declining under the CLP, including total offences down 3%, assaults down 11%, commercial break-ins down 32%, and motor vehicle theft down 23%.

Regional crime results have also improved, with total offences down 25% in Alice Springs, house break-ins down 38% in Darwin, and assaults reduced across Nhulunbuy, Katherine and Tenant Creek.

House break-ins have been dramatically slashed in the Territory as the Finocchiaro CLP Government's law and order crackdown reels in crime statistics that soared under the former Labor government.

Crime statistics show that house break-ins skyrocketed by 63% in seven years under Labor as crime became normalised across the NT.

But in just 12 months, the Finocchiaro CLP Government has lived up to its promise to reduce crime by reducing house break-ins by 23%, a stunning turnaround from a life of crime under Labor.

"Territorians wanted a government that would listen, and act to restore community safety," Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said.

"We made a commitment to tackle the root causes of crime; we promised to reduce crime to restore our quality of life here in the Territory and the latest data shows that we are delivering on that promise."

The new data compares crime rates under seven years of Labor (2017-2023) against the record of the Finocchiaro CLP Government, with the statistics making grim reading for Labor's offender apologists:

Total offences rose 39% under Labor but have fallen 3% under the CLPOffences against the person rose 58% under Labor but have fallen 9% under the CLPRobberies rose 242% under Labor but have fallen 3% under the CLPAssaults rose 59% under Labor but have fallen 11% under the CLPSexual offences rose 8% under Labor but have fallen 7% under the CLPHouse break-ins rose 63% under Labor but have fallen 23% under the CLPCommercial break-ins rose 38% under Labor but have fallen 32% under the CLPMotor vehicle theft rose 8% under Labor but has fallen 23% under the CLPOther theft rose 12% under Labor but has fallen 14% under the CLPTotal property offences rose 32% under Labor but have fallen 12% under the CLP

Total offences under Labor rose from less than 30,000 in 2017 to nearly 41,000 in 2023. This figure fell back to below 31,000 in just 12 months under the Finocchiaro CLP Government.

"My government has made good progress so far, but I can assure Territorians that we know there is still more work to do, and in our year of growth, certainty and security, reducing crime will remain our number one priority" Mrs Finocchiaro said.

"In our first year, the number of victims of crime fell by 10.2% and as a result, business confidence is returning, and the Territory economy is growing.

"That means more families feeling safer in their homes, more businesses opening their doors with confidence, and more people enjoying the Territory lifestyle we are so fiercely proud of."

The new data also shows improved regional crime results, including:
