Cumberland Police Arrest Man, Seize Gun in Merrylands

Cumberland Police have charged a man with firearms offences following a vehicle search in Merrylands this morning.

About 7.50am (Sunday 17 May 2026), police were patrolling the Merrylands area, when they located a man acting suspiciously in a parked utility outside a restaurant at the intersection of Merrylands and Woodville Road.

While speaking to the man – aged 40 – police located a locked box in the back of the vehicle.

Police seized the box after the man told officers he was unable to open it at the scene.

Following inquiries, about 10am, the man attended Granville Police Station, to open the box which allegedly contained a pistol and two loaded magazines.

The man was subsequently arrested and charged with Possess unregistered unauthorised pistol in public place, not keep firearm safely-pistol, possess loaded firearm public place, and possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority.

He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court tomorrow (Monday 18 May 2026).
