Cyclone Fina Recovery: Various Sporting Ovals Reopen

Darwin City Council
  • Eight sporting ovals have fully reopened and three available on a restricted basis for allocated sporting users.

  • City of Darwin continues to progress through the initial three-month Cyclone Fina recovery, focused on the highest-risk and highest-use areas.

  • All local parks and open spaces remain closed to the public due to safety concerns.

City of Darwin has reopened the majority of its sporting ovals, marking an important milestone in Cyclone Fina recovery efforts.

Of the 19 City of Darwin sporting ovals, eight and their surrounds are now fully open, with a further three available on a restricted basis for allocated sporting users.

Recent wet season rain and strong winds have slowed clean-up works, and City of Darwin continues to prioritise safety across the municipality.

While selected ovals have reopened, the community is urged to stay out of closed local parks and open spaces due to ongoing risks from falling or compromised trees. Additional tree assessments and remediation works are continuing as conditions allow.

Some areas, including East Point Reserve, will take longer to restore due to the extent of damage and ongoing weather-related risks.

Lord Mayor Peter Styles said the reopening of sporting ovals was welcome news for clubs, players and volunteers as the dry season sporting calendar approaches.

"Sport plays a huge role in Darwin life, the reopening of these ovals is an important step in getting our community back out enjoying these activities," Mr Styles said.

"Our crews have worked hard through challenging wet season conditions to make these fields safe, and I thank them for their continued efforts."

"While this is positive progress, safety remains our priority. We ask the community to respect closures in parks and open spaces while recovery works continue, so we can reopen them safely."
