Dangerous Fire Conditions Prompt Sydney National Parks Closure

As a precaution, some of Sydney's national parks will be closed from Wednesday 20 September 2023 due to forecast extreme fire conditions and a Total Fire Ban (TOBAN).

The following national parks, including all tracks, trails, and all visitor precincts, will be closed on Wednesday 20 September:

  • Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park – east of Cowan Waters (West Head)
  • Garigal National Park
  • Sydney Harbour National Park – north of Sydney Harbour (including Middle Head, Dobroyd Head, North Head, Bradley's Head)

This is a precautionary measure and at present there is no immediate fire risk inside these parks.

National Parks and Wildlife Service fire crews will be actively patrolling across Sydney's parks and reserves.

In addition, all remote area campgrounds, walking tracks and trails will be closed in other parks right across the Sydney area.

These closures will remain in place for the duration of the TOBAN. However, all park visitors must check the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service Alerts List for up-to-date information on park conditions and closures.

Further closures may be put in place at short notice if the fire danger escalates.

We apologise for any inconvenience. However, the safety of national park visitors and staff is the highest priority.
