Deakin rises to ninth in world for sports-related subjects

Sport science and sport management courses at Deakin have experienced spectacular success in the past three years, rising from 30^th place in 2018 to 15^th in 2019, and now ninth in 2020.

The result adds to the institution's global ranking of third and its Australia-wide ranking of first in the 2018 Shanghai rankings of sport science departments - the latest Shanghai rankings available for sports science.

Deakin's Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Liz Johnson said today's official rise into the top 10 universities in the world for sports-related courses reaffirmed Deakin as a progressive and innovative destination for sport science and sport management education and research.

"I would like to honour all our bright minds, the thinkers and innovators here at Deakin who are passionate about ensuring our students benefit from the very best research and teaching experience, and acknowledge that our communities and society as a whole benefit from our innovative research breakthroughs," Professor Johnson said.

"I'd particularly like to congratulate our teachers and those who work behind the scenes of our lectures, tutorials and other learning environments across the increasingly sophisticated sport-related fields, because this rising to ninth in the world is a significant validation of their outstanding efforts."

The annual QS World University Rankings by Subject reveal the best universities for 48 different academic subjects.

Deakin made it into the top 50 in three subjects, and the top 100 in three other subjects.

Deakin was ranked in the five broad categories of Social Sciences and Management, Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine and Natural Sciences, and ranked in 27 subjects.

In the 2019 QS Rankings for top universities under 50 years of age, Deakin was ranked sixth in Australia and 29^th in the world.
