Disaster assistance extended following Far North Queensland floods

Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services The Honourable Mark Ryan

Disaster assistance has been extended to the Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Croydon and Etheridge which were both hit by severe thunderstorms and flooding associated with a low pressure trough in February.

Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-Queensland Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Minister for Emergency Management and National Recovery and Resilience, Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie said this will support more communities impacted by the deluge from 1 – 7 February.

"Croydon Shire Council and Etheridge Shire councils are the latest LGAs to receive assistance, as the impacts of these floods are realised in Far North Queensland," Minister McKenzie said.

"An unstable air-mass produced multiple days of extreme showers and storms over Far North Queensland, which resulted in damaged roads and other essential public infrastructure.

"Funding is made available to the two councils to help with clean-up efforts and towards repairing the damage so the community can get back on its feet as soon as possible," Minister McKenzie said.

Queensland Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan said the Queensland and Australian governments continue to work together to ensure assistance was available to any disaster affected communities.

"Widespread flooding has touched so much of the state in recent weeks and we are providing help wherever it is needed," Minister Ryan said.

"The North West has not been forgotten and the communities of Croydon and Etheridge will be provided with all the support needed to get them through this most recent onslaught of rain.

"The funding will help with cleaning up any debris and repair of essential public assets such as roads, culverts and floodways.

"The Australian and Queensland governments will continue to jointly support the long-term recovery of all communities hit by the rains."

DRFA assistance is now available in the local government areas of Carpentaria, Croydon, Etheridge and Mareeba in response to the Far North Queensland Low Pressure Trough, 1 – 7 February 2022 event.
