A search is underway for the driver of a stolen vehicle that crashed in Merrylands today.

About 12.15pm (Wednesday 30 December 2020), officers from Merrylands Highway Patrol allegedly detected a confirmed stolen Toyota Hilux utility travelling at speed on Parramatta Road.

Officers activated their warning devices, however, the driver failed to stop.

A pursuit was initiated before being terminated a minute later due to the dangerous driving of the Hilux.

About 12.20pm, the stolen Hilux was travelling south on Woodville Road, when it crashed into a Mazda CX9 at the intersection of Merrylands Road.

The female driver of the Mazda, and her seven-year-old son, were not injured.

The Hilux again allegedly failed to stop and continued travelling along Woodville Road, before the driver lost control, crashed through the front brick fence of a home, then into a tree and a parked Ford Ranger.

The driver of the stolen Hilux ran from the crash and was last seen heading south along Merrylands Road.

A male passenger of the stolen vehicle was treated at the scene for a suspected fractured shoulder and pelvis, as well as serious facial injuries and internal injuries.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital for further treatment and remains under police guard.

Officers from Parramatta and Cumberland Police Area Commands, together with PolAir and the Dog Unit, conducted an extensive search for the driver, however he has not been located.

The driver is described as being of African appearance and aged between 20 and 25.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are now being investigated by officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit.
