Drivers Alerted: Prepare for Winter After Breona Snow

Police are urging motorists to drive to the conditions and be properly prepared before travelling to Tasmania's elevated areas after several people became stranded on Highland Lakes Road at Breona overnight due to snow.

All motorists were accounted for, with no reports of serious injury.

Senior Constable Jessica Weston said that weather and road conditions can change rapidly in alpine and elevated regions, creating hazardous driving conditions.

"Snow and ice can develop quickly and make roads extremely dangerous, leaving motorists at risk of becoming stranded if they are not adequately prepared," Senior Constable Weston said.

"We're asking anyone planning travel to elevated areas to check weather forecasts and road conditions before they leave and to ensure they're prepared for sub-zero temperatures in the event of a breakdown, crash or unexpected delay."

"If your vehicle is not suitable for snow and icy conditions, or you don't have the necessary equipment, such as snow chains, you should reconsider your travel plans," she said.

"Tow trucks may not be able to access vehicles that become stuck in snow or off-road locations, and many remote areas have limited mobile phone reception."

Motorists should carry an emergency kit whenever travelling in alpine areas during winter including food, water, warm clothing, blankets, a torch, spare batteries or charging devices, and sufficient fuel.

"Being prepared can make a significant difference if you become stranded or require assistance," Senior Constable Weston said.

"Having the right equipment in your vehicle helps keep you safe while enabling you to contact emergency services if needed."

Before travelling, motorists should check current road and weather information through the Tasmania Police Community Alerts website and the Bureau of Meteorology.
